Gyda is a 12 year old Norse girl living in 8th century Scandinavia. She's tall and thin for her age, with dark blonde hair that she usually wears braided. She's the only daughter of the Norse warrior Ragnar Lothbrok and the shieldmaiden Lagertha, along with her brother Bjorn. Growing up on a farm and with two warriors as a parents, she has knowledge of farming and weaving, and some basic skill at the sword and shield. When she was eleven years old, her father set on a secret voyage to England, bringing back with him not exactly treasure, but an English monk (who they call priest) named Athelstan who becomes part of the family.

This sets off events in which her father becomes earl of Kattegat through one-on-one combat, raising their position from farmers to overseeing an entire village and area. At 12 years old, with most of the men off in Gotland, a plague goes through the village and claims Gyda as one of its victims.

She enters Milliways after her funeral pyre in the end of the season 1 episode 9.
