Canon Character Information
Appearance: Gyda is tall for her age, with long, dark blonde hair that she either leaves hanging down or in a braid, and grey eyes. Having grown up on a rather well-to-do farm, she’s of a wiry built and surprisingly hardy despite her frame. Since her father became earl, her clothing is still homespun, but the fabric is of a better quality, and she has a penchant for darker, richer colors. Her demeanor is calm and gentle, and though she’s still a young girl, she carries herself with a surety of someone who knows her own worth.

headcanon points
-started learning to fight after being bullied by two boys while spending time in Kattegat.
- Started learning to read from Athelstan, since it’s been a year within the time frame, her ability to read is at a five-year reading level..
Personality:
(As with all apps, this is the meat of the application. Include defining traits and reasons they are who they are and don't be afraid to list off life events that further shape them. What are their strengths, weaknesses, fears and where do they draw courage from. Headcanon is encouraged! We would like to see a minimum of 300 words here. TL;DR your little hearts out.)
The only daughter in her family, Gyda is cherished by her family, and even her uncle, a berserker, treats her with the fondness and is quick to protect her from danger. If her father thinks she’s growing tired or needs to see something, he thinks nothing of taking her up and letting her ride on his shoulders, afraid or worried, she doesn’t hesitate to reach out to her parents for comfort. She loves her family dearly and doesn’t like to see any of them in fear or pain; if she can, she’ll do whatever it is her power to take care of them, or urge them to take care of themselves if they’re capable of it. When her mother was anxious to the point of not eating, she was only able to wait so long before pointing it out to her. Even when Athelstan is brought into the family as a slave, at no point does she look down on him, but immediately sees him as a rather strange part of the family.
At some point in her life, Gyda took to learning the sword, shield and ax, but unlike the rest of her family, this is taken as a matter of course, not the pressure of becoming a warrior. The reality is that Gyda is also still a child, even by the standards of her culture, and in truth, she has no great taste for combat. As much as she enjoys listening to the heroes in poems and sagas, and knows how some start their adventures as children, as a young girl, Gyda never felt the same pressure on her shoulders as her brother. Had she not died from the plague so young, her parents would’ve been perfectly content with her deciding to start and take care of a family of her own, instead of seeking glory in battle. At the time she arrives in the game, she’s only been learning to fight for a year, so she lacks the prowess and confidence that only comes with experience in battle. In the face of a large threat or violence, she will only fight if she has no choice and no way out, but but if told to run for cover, she would instead take the safer option.
Though she prefers to keep to hearth and home, Gyda also inherited her father’s curiosity and insightfulness. There’s a sensitivity in her that’s able to read a person’s mood and gather that something’s not entirely right, even in the event that someone’s trying to cover it up. She’s eager to listen to stories and hear of other lands and peoples, even if she’s resigned to the fact that she may never get the chance to explore them herself. She doesn’t mind listening to Athelstan talk of his god, because she’s curious of his religion, and knows that it cheers him up a little to talk of the book he was always reading. Her curiosity extended to even asking to be taught to read, taking pride in knowing what the letters mean. While her people lack the knowledge of how to make paper, Gyda takes pride in knowing that she’s one of the few people in her village able to even read a little, using bits of bark and ash from the fire to copy letters and small words. Being in a part of the world with long, harsh winters and a lot of time indoors, Gyda has a love of games and stories that she’s not yet grown out of, or taking care of the animals that live in the hall. While her father may be earl and they themselves now live in the Great Hall, Gyda has spent most of her life as a farm girl-she’ll always look to taking care of animals and the home to keep it safe and secure.
Above all else, Gyda was raised in the Norse culture and in a family of warriors. She’s had to grow up fast in a society where death and violence were common parts of life: when we first see her at ten years old, she’s already helping her mother around the farm, and when she sees several men enter their home with weapons, she trusts her mother to get rid of them, even as she goes into hiding herself. She’s seen people get killed from violence or sickness, saw new mothers die in childbirth or infants die shortly after being born-all of this while still being considered a child in her society. She’s sensitive and rarely shows what she’s truly feeling, instead she prefers to internalize what she’s feeling and deal with it on her own, not wishing to be seen as weak and unable to deal when life deals a hard blow. Things have to be especially bad and desperate for her to start crying and panicking. Yet for all this, she’s not a violent person, nor does she go through life listless and waiting for the next terrible thing to happen. Quiet and sensitive by nature, Gyda places faith in the gods and an underlying hope that things will turn out alright in the end.
.
Powers/Abilities/Talents: Living on a farm, Gyda is able to take care of animals, and is fairly skilled at making and weaving various forms of yarn and thread. She’s also able to cook and handle what could be considered ‘old-fashioned’ tools and methods..
